Makkah vs Madinah: a relative city brand positioning

Makkah vs Madinah: a relative city brand positioning

Having worked across a multitude of projects in both cities, and having had the chance to experience Madinah, I felt this was a fabulous case study for an exploration of relative positioning.

Makkah and Madinah should never be positioned the same way. Both are sacred, globally significant, yet from an emotional perspective, they serve very different roles in the hearts and minds of their audiences.

MAKKAH is THE CALL, where faith becomes action. The Kaaba, The Qibla, Hajj and Umrah. The platforms center on movement, ritual, unity and submission.

Makkah calls you. Madinah holds you.

Makkah is where millions come with purpose.

MADINAH is THE EMBRACE, where faith becomes connection. The Prophet’s Mosque, The Seerah, Quba and Uhud. The platforms center on history, reflection, peace, and belonging.

Madinah is where millions come and find presence.

That creates a powerful relative positioning for these great city brands:

→ Makkah calls you.
→ Madinah holds you.

One is the spiritual destination, whilst the other is the spiritual dwelling.

One moves the body through ritual, the other gives the soul room to reflect.

The opportunity is not to make these two extraordinary cities more alike. It is to make their differences more meaningful.

→ Makkah is “The Call” and
→ Madinah is “The Embrace”

Two Holy Cities. Two distinct experiences.
One extraordinary spiritual journey.
